ChongOk Lee Matthews was born in Seoul, Korea, and moved to the United States in 1972 to pursue her studies. After living in Los Angeles for ten years, she relocated to Texas in 1984, where she continues to create art at her Matthews Art Studio in Houston and at the Winter Street Studio.

Matthews has exhibited widely across the United States, Asia, and Europe, and has maintained a long-standing involvement with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, including leading fundraising efforts for the Korean Art Gallery from 2004 to 2007, serving on the Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2013, and currently serving as a member of the Asian Art Subcommittee. She remains actively engaged with the museum while developing her practice and presenting her work internationally.
