Selections from afar

okusendō is a new space based on an old idea.

For generations, artists and art dealers have presented their works in modest spaces, their homes. Their intent - to connect people with art, to bring beauty, or function, or concept into the everyday. Over time art has turned from something to live with into something to be visited in a rarefied setting. We are changing that. Translating to a place for “selections from afar,” okusendō offers Houstonians a different way to bring art into the homes.

okusendō is based in a historic house in the Montrose neighborhood and features a main floor gallery. Fine art and high-end design is presented in a setting that invites viewers to imagine these objects in their own spaces. Juxtaposing the unfamiliar with the everyday shows our audience how art has a place in their daily lives.

Houston has a long history of unique businesses in unique spaces. We are not the first art space to pop up in a old home and we credit those places among many for inspiring this idea. Japan is also a source of inspiration, for it’s incorporation of the past into the present and it’s attention to craft. As unlikely as it may seem, Houston and Japan share a similar sensibility - that you can find art in unexpected spaces and it is something that should exist along side us everyday. That ethos guides us to showcase great things, carefully selected from afar.
